O'Hare is big and busy, but the rules for group pickups are straightforward once everyone knows to head for the lower level. Here is how a team, a conference group or a family finds its ride.

Lower level: where your airport shuttle meets the group

Limos and black cars use the center lane, lane 2, on the lower level. For charter buses, pickup is in the commercial lanes, also on the lower level, and at Terminal 5, charter pickup uses the outer lane by Door 5D.

Ride-app pickups at Terminals 2 and 3 are on the upper level. If someone in your group spots an app queue upstairs and wanders over, bring them back down: your booked vehicle is not there.

Charter buses may not use O'Hare's Multi-Modal Facility. Travellers who have used it before sometimes head there on autopilot, so remind the group that a chartered coach or minibus meets you at the terminal's lower level. For a Sprinter or smaller vehicle, you will agree the exact meeting point with the driver ahead of time.

O'Hare to the Loop or McCormick Place

Downtown is about 17 miles, roughly 30 to 60 minutes off-peak, and the upper end is common at rush hour. For coach parking, conference groups heading to McCormick Place can reserve space in the Marshalling Yard, on 31st Street at Lake Shore Drive. Chicago's idling limit for diesel vehicles is three minutes an hour, so a long wait at a hotel door means engine off, which is worth knowing on a January evening.

Teams and school groups flying into ORD

A visiting team with kit bags needs luggage space more than seats, which is why a motorcoach with under-floor bays often beats two smaller vans. School groups bound for the Field Museum or Shedd Aquarium can use reserved day parking at the Adler Lot on the Museum Campus. There is a CTA Blue Line station inside the airport too, but it is no fun with twenty suitcases.
