Short hops from San Diego International

The airport is only about 3 miles from downtown, so the ride to a Gaslamp or Harbor Island hotel is short. That also means there is no long drive to absorb an early landing or a late pickup. Send flight numbers, and for a wedding or reunion with many arrivals, tell us whether guests are happy to wait for a group run or would rather be collected as they land.

Convention and Comic-Con weeks in the Gaslamp

The San Diego Convention Center, at 111 W. Harbor Drive by the Gaslamp, hosts Comic-Con and a busy calendar of trade shows. When a big show is on, downtown streets and hotel driveways crowd up, and so does the pool of available vehicles. Book early, and choose a pickup point a block from the busiest entrance.

USS Midway, the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park with a group

Navy Pier, home of the USS Midway Museum, is closed to parking for anything longer than 18 feet, and buses cannot stage there. Expect the driver to drop the group close to the ticket office and come back at an agreed time. The San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park has oversized-vehicle parking, and since January 2026 the city has charged for parking in Balboa Park, one more reason to let the driver handle it.

The Safari Park is out in Escondido, so treat it as its own day rather than squeezing it in after the Zoo.

Temecula wine country, LEGOLAND and the border

Temecula wine country is about 58 miles inland, 70 to 90 minutes each way, and a Sprinter van rental with a driver is the natural choice for friends or a bridal party tasting through the afternoon. About 33 miles north, LEGOLAND California in Carlsbad suits a family or school group on a minibus. The border at San Ysidro lies about 20 miles south; if anyone plans to cross on foot, check travel documents well before the day.

Questions

At the USS Midway, is the driver allowed to wait on Navy Pier?

No. Vehicles over 18 feet cannot park on the pier and buses cannot stage there. The driver drops you near the ticket office and comes back at the time you agree.

Is a Sprinter van enough for a Temecula wine tour?

For up to 19 guests, yes. For a bigger party, a midsize coach takes up to 35. Mention any bottles you plan to bring home.

Should we book early for Comic-Con week?

Yes. Big convention weeks draw on the same local vehicles, so the earlier you send dates and headcount, the more choice the group has.
