Accessible transportation for groups with wheelchair users
Every member of the group should be able to travel together. If someone uses a wheelchair or has limited mobility, tell us at the start and we will look for a vehicle that works for everyone.
Asking for an accessible coach, and how much notice to give
The term over-the-road bus means a coach whose passenger deck sits raised above a baggage compartment, which describes the typical motorcoach. Charter operators of these buses must provide an accessible bus on request. They may require up to 48 hours' notice, and with shorter notice they must still make a reasonable effort. Our advice is simpler: tell us at the quote stage, not the week before.

What the rules require
- Charter OTRB operators must provide an accessible bus on request.
- Accessible OTRBs have a lift and two wheelchair securement locations.
What an accessible coach or minibus looks like
Accessible over-the-road buses have a lift and two wheelchair securement locations. Motorcoaches can come with an optional wheelchair lift and two tie-downs, some midsize coaches are lift-ready, and minibuses come in wheelchair-lift floor plans. If more than two members of your group use wheelchairs, tell us, because it may mean a second vehicle or a different vehicle type.
Companions, dignity and the details to share
The operator may not insist that a passenger with a disability travel with a companion to help them. To help the operator prepare, tell us the type of wheelchair, whether anyone transfers to a seat, and anything the driver should know. Also check that each stop on your itinerary is accessible, from hotel entrances to museum drop-offs.
Airports need the same thought. At Dulles, charter buses pick up at Doors 4 and 5 on the Arrivals level. At JFK, car services for Terminals 5 and 7 use the Howard Beach AirTrain lot, an extra transfer a wheelchair user may prefer to skip, so the driver will confirm a meeting point that works.
